In a world where the voices of many women are often silenced, there are those who find transformative strength in adversity. Ingrid Martínez de Lacayo, a Salvadoran woman from the department of Cabañas, has not only found a way to heal her own wounds through literature but has also become a voice for other women who, like her, have faced violence, injustice, and despair.

Through her social media platforms, Ingrid shares her poems, reflections, and stories, many of which address themes such as gender-based violence, the silent suffering of women in their homes, and the need for female empowerment. In her writings, she not only offers words of comfort but also provides practical resources for seeking help, turning her verses into a bridge toward hope.
Ingrid has endured painful experiences, including the loss of her home and being evicted, events that plunged her into sadness and uncertainty. It was during one of these moments of anguish that she wrote her first poem, an act that marked the beginning of her literary journey.
“What seemed like it would destroy me only became the instrument to turn me into a writer”
Ingrid shares that she has found in writing "a way to release much of what I suffered, and I discovered something liberating that eventually became part of my daily life." Through her writings, she addresses themes such as selflove, respect, and the value of women in society: “In the city where I live, I’ve realized that there is a lot of ignorance about the rights we have as women. I always strive to promote selflove among women, respect for ourselves, and the value we must give ourselves within society,” she explains.
Her message is clear: no woman is alone in her suffering, and there is always a light of hope, even in the darkest times. “Over time, I realized that what I experienced wasn’t just meant to leave me sad and desolate, but that it was something temporary. I became more human, more empathetic, and more loving,” she affirms.
Education and dreams for the future
Beyond her literary work, Ingrid has sought to educate herself to better serve her community. She completed a course on human trafficking, which deepened her awareness of the challenges many women face. Currently, she is participating in a peace education program with the organization IWPG, aiming to contribute to building a more just and equitable society. Her background in law, acquired during her studies at Universidad Doctor José Matías Delgado, has also given her a solid understanding of human rights.
“We cannot lose our humanity in the face of others’ pain or the suffering of the environment,” Ingrid reflects. With this conviction, she continues to learn, write, and create spaces for dialogue and awareness.
Among her personal goals is publishing her first book and, later, giving talks and conferences. “My aim is not only to give a voice to women but also to the less privileged, to those who cannot find justice,” she says with determination.
The importance of mental health
Ingrid emphasizes the value of psychological support, especially for women facing stress and trauma. For her, seeking psychological help was a crucial decision in her healing process, allowing her to better understand herself and overcome life’s challenges with greater strength. “Now I understand it was the best decision,” she says.
“Psychological support helps you to listen and to know more about yourself ”
In her role as a mother, Ingrid has been a fundamental guide for her son, who, at a young age, is also a writer and artist. Through homeschooling, she has been his mentor and guide, nurturing his creativity and love for the arts. Her son has already published his first book, an achievement that reflects the positive impact of her dedication and support.
Ingrid Martínez is undoubtedly a woman who inspires. Her story reminds us that even in the darkest moments, it is possible to find light and turn pain into a transformative force. Through her poetry, activism, and empathy, Ingrid has not only healed her own wounds but has also extended a hand to other women.
“The road is not easy, but you are not alone,” is the message Ingrid wants to leave in the heart of every woman who reads her words. In a world that so desperately needs hope and resilience, her voice is a powerful reminder that, together, we can transform pain into poetry and adversity into hope.
“No pain or suffering can destroy you or your dreams… Women are like butterflies: transformation and resilience are necessary.”
